PATHWAYS TO LEARNING MATHEMATICS
Before joining Mahatma, my understanding of teaching Mathematics was largely traditional, focused on solving problems individually at a desk. However, my experience at Mahatma has revolutionized my perspective. The innovative and engaging methods implemented here have transformed both my teaching and the way students interact with Mathematics. I owe much of this transformation to my inspirational mentors, Premalatha Ma’am and Hamsapriya Ma’am, whose unwavering belief in my potential has been a constant source of motivation.
One standout aspect of our approach is project-based learning, where students tackle real-world problems using Mathematical concepts. This method not only makes Mathematics relevant but also deeply engaging. The Mathematics Club and various competitions further stimulate interest and excellence, creating a dynamic environment where students are excited about Mathematics.
Professional development for teachers is a priority at Mahatma. We regularly participate in training sessions to stay updated with the latest teaching methods and technologies.
Collaborative learning is another innovative strategy we embrace. By working in groups, students learn from each other and approach problems from multiple perspectives. This method, combined with Premalatha Ma’am’s interdisciplinary approach, integrates Mathematics with Science, Art and other subjects. Such integration helps students see the broader applications of Mathematics in various fields.
Mahatma is a pioneer in implementing team teaching and the flipped classroom method, both of which are highly commendable. We also encourage students to undertake research projects and present their findings at Mathematics exhibition, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the subject. For those who struggle with Mathematics, we offer additional support during and after school hours.
Our Mathematics Lab is equipped with manipulatives that help students grasp abstract concepts more concretely. The curriculum at Mahatma emphasizes critical thinking and problem-solving skills over rote memorization, preparing students to excel in diverse fields.
As the Mathematics Coordinator, I have witnessed the profound impact of these methods on our students. The collaborative learning environment and interdisciplinary approaches have enriched my teaching experience and contributed to my professional growth. Mahatma truly fosters a love for learning and equips students with the skills to excel by understanding the critical role of Mathematics in our world.
