Krishnamachari Srikkanth, born on December 21, 1959, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is a name that resonates with cricket enthusiasts in India. Known for his aggressive and entertaining style of play, Srikkanth was a hard-hitting opening batsman and an occasional right-arm off-break bowler.
Early Career and Rise to Fame
Srikkanth made his international debut at the age of 21 in an ODI against England in November 1981. His Test debut came two days later at the Wankhede Stadium in Bombay. He quickly caught the eye of the selectors with his innovative and explosive batting style, which was a stark contrast to his opening partner, Sunil Gavaskar.
1983 World Cup Hero
One of the most memorable moments in Srikkanth’s career was his performance in the 1983 Cricket World Cup. He top scored for India with 38 runs in the final against the West Indies, helping India secure their first World Cup victory. This win was a turning point in Indian cricket history and Srikkanth’s contribution was invaluable.
Captaincy and Later Career
Srikkanth was appointed captain for the tour of Pakistan in 1989, where he led India to a creditable series draw. However, his batting inconsistencies led to his removal from the team, and he had to wait two years before making a comeback. He played his last Test in 1992 against Australia and his last ODI against South Africa in the same year.
Post-Retirement Contributions
After retiring from active cricket, Srikkanth transitioned into a successful career as a coach, commentator, and administrator. He served as the chairman of the men’s selection committee and was also the ambassador for the Chennai Super Kings franchise in the Indian Premier League.

Srikkanth’s legacy in Indian cricket is marked by his aggressive and crowd-pleasing style of play. He scored 2,062 runs in 43 Tests and 4,091 runs in 146 ODIs. His contributions to Indian cricket, both on and off the field, have left an indelible mark on the sport.
