A Memorable Day at the Velammal School Science Expo – Kutty Scientist!
November 8, 2025, was truly an inspiring and memorable day as I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Science Expo at Velammal School, Viraganoor, Madurai. The event brought together young innovators and curious minds from nearly 20 different schools, all eager to showcase their creativity and scientific thinking.
The participants were grouped into three categories – Juniors, Seniors, and Super Seniors. The entire campus buzzed with energy, and excitement. My daughter, Vibusha, a Grade IV student at Mahatma Global Gateway, was one of the participants. Accompanied by her dedicated teachers, she entered the campus radiating excitement and confidence. Everyone was eager to showcase the project they had worked so diligently on.
Every team came equipped with well-crafted models and prototypes, each reflecting hours of dedication and work. At the junior level, the exhibits featured models like the Digestive System Demonstration, the Volcano with Lava Lamp Effect, and the Pinhole Camera Model. These young learners not only explained scientific principles clearly but also displayed an impressive grasp of how things work in the real world. Their confidence and creativity made every presentation captivating, and it was evident that each project was backed by genuine hard work and curiosity.
The expo’s highlight was the presence of the Chief Guest, Mr. T. Mariappan, Senior Scientist of Department of Health Research, from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Government of India. He was accompanied by two esteemed judges from Thiagarajar College, who had the challenging task of evaluating the exhibits. With so much talent and innovation on display, identifying the winners was no easy job!
During his address at the school auditorium, Mr. T. Mariappan delivered a truly motivating and heartfelt speech. He emphasized the importance of nurturing curiosity, experimentation, and scientific thinking among students from a young age. His talk about his own childhood journey and path to becoming a scientist was especially inspiring. He encouraged every participant, fondly referring to them as “Kutty Scientists”, reminding them that participating and exploring are far more important than just winning. His words left a lasting impression on both students and parents alike.
As the afternoon unfolded, the much-awaited prize distribution ceremony filled the venue with excitement and joy. Every participant was appreciated for their enthusiasm and effort, and the winners received well-deserved recognition for their outstanding presentations. The smiles, applause, and sense of accomplishment created a heartwarming atmosphere.
A special note of gratitude goes to the teachers, coordinators, and senior staff of Mahatma Global Gateway School, whose unwavering support made this experience memorable for the children. Their encouragement and guidance played a crucial role in motivating students to participate and present their innovative ideas with confidence.
We owe special thanks to Vice Principal Ms. K. Pushpalatha and Ms. Afrin Taaj for their excellent coordination and for taking such wonderful care of our little ones throughout the event. Their patience, dedication, and personal attention ensured that every child felt comfortable, valued, and encouraged during this big day.
The Science Expo at Velammal School was not just an event — it was a celebration of creativity, learning, and young scientific minds. Watching children explain their projects with such excitement and confidence was truly heartening. Events like these remind us how important it is to provide young learners with platforms to explore, experiment, and express themselves freely.
Congratulations to all the participants and winners for their remarkable efforts! And heartfelt appreciation to everyone who worked behind the scenes to make this event such a grand success. It was indeed a day filled with learning, inspiration, and pride — a day we’ll cherish for a long time.
